EFT (Emotional Freedom Technique)

As an EFT practitioner trained in 2013, I’ve had my own world opened up to the benefits and delights of this modality. Once I began using this method as a way to help myself, I knew I had to learn it to share with others, too!

EFT is something we can use at any time, in any place, with outstanding results. The basics are truly simple and easy to learn. Not only that, it’s totally free to use these basics ourselves. What could be better than that?!

What is the Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT)?

Some say it is like acupuncture without the needles. A very simple, yet powerful process, it involves gentle tapping on the ends of each of our Meridians. A Meridian is a fixed energy pathway in our body, which carries energy just like in our bloodstream. This energy is our life force, that allows us to flourish and grow. This life force is known as different names, such as Chi in Chinese Medicine or Prana in Ayurvedic Medicine.

Sometimes, the energy that flows through our Meridians can be disrupted. A burst of energy, maybe due to strong emotions or a trauma, can block the flow of energy. It’s just like a surge of electricity that blows a circuit.

We tap on the points at the end of each of these pathways, which is like saying “Hello!” to the energy that runs through each meridian. By doing this, we begin to instruct the energy to shift and release, so the energy can now flow freely through our bodies.

What happens in an EFT session?

Each session is uniquely tailored to your situation and what you would like help with. EFT can be applied to any issue, which is part of what makes it so wonderful! Whether your concern is physical, emotional, mental, or even spiritual, we can use tapping to work on the related energy.

We begin by having a short chat about what you would like to work on. Whether the session is in person or by phone or Skype, I will guide you through the Meridian points that we gently tap on. The Meridian tapping points are shown in the picture below. Every time we tap on a point, I say a statement for you to repeat after me. The statements are designed based on the information you give me about your situation, which is a part of why a session with a practitioner is so beneficial, as they are trained to guide you through this process. All you need to do is listen and tap!

Throughout the session, I will check in with you to see how you’re doing and to talk about any thoughts or feelings that may have changed as we have been tapping. Each time we talk, I’ll ask you to rate the intensity of your discomfort on a scale of 0-10. This is what’s known as a SUDS scale (Subjective Units of Distress Scale), and is an effective way to measure the changes through your session.

Why is working with energies so useful?

As time passes, it is increasingly clear, based on modern research as well as leading, cutting-edge thought, that our energies play a key role in our health and wellbeing. There are articles in the Resource section and information in my Blog, which go into detail about energy and the connection between mind, body, and spirit.

At it’s essence, we are now aware of how pivotal our thoughts are, how what we think has a physiological and energetic parallel in our consciousness. When we work with our energies, we are able to create dramatic shifts, and by releasing blocked energy, we create space for cognitive shifts.

I haven’t heard of EFT before and it sounds a little strange. How come such a great tool isn’t more well known?

This is a common question, and it’s a great one to ask! There are many alternative therapies that have been created and come to the forefront of the wellness industry in recent decades. EFT is one of those, and just in the last year or so, there have been many articles in publications such as the UK newspapers The Times and The Guardian. More people are being exposed to this technique and experiencing the benefits, which I am so pleased about.

EFT is also a technique that is highly regarded within the natural health and life coach industry, and it is endorsed by wellness experts and life coaches, including Dr. Joseph Mercola, Dr. Wayne Dyer, Jack Canfield, Deepak Chopra and Joe Vitale.

What kinds of things can EFT help with?

It’s truly a deeply versatile technique and we can apply it to any area of your life that you’d like help with.

In terms of issues around food, weight and body image, EFT is widely used to help with:

  • managing cravings
  • dealing with impulsive behaviours
  • addressing behaviour such as binging, purging and overexercise
  • shifting perceptions and challenges with body image
  • letting go of anxieties around weight and food
  • releasing blocks in the way of healthy weight loss
  • working on underlying trauma in eating disorders

What was your experience of EFT?

I began tapping on a daily basis when I was struggling with some core issues and in a place that felt very dark and difficult. I felt very isolated and withdrawn, so decided to try out something new and different as a way to help myself. I found some great EFT videos online and started tapping for a few minutes every day.

Immediately, I began to feel calmer, and more at ease with what was going on in my life. I knew then I had to learn this technique to be able to share it with others, because it was such a fantastic way to feel more peaceful and grounded.

Since then, in completing the training and working with people, I’ve discovered that using tapping to work on specific issues is remarkable, because we can release blocks within us that we have been carrying for decades, as well as help the process of changing our beliefs and how we think.
